If you’re looking for Dark Twisted Fantasy-type anime’s, then this is the one for you. Both have a MC who’s “young”, but has aged in a time-stop event, so essentially they look 12-13 but they’re actually 50+. Additionally, incredible sad moments, that are littered with achey backstories that literally speak numbers. The backstory is “hidden”, and that’s what really keeps you on the edge of your seat, with ounces of comedic humor, funny questionable scenes, and overall amazing atmosphere of glee and glum!

The protagonist for both of these shows end up under contracts with someone who’s linked with the spirit world and end up having to do labour for them… These shows have very similar beginnings and both have a lot of Japanese folklore in them. They’re both comedies with some serious elements and an deeper overarching plot. The arcs are short spanning from 1-2 episodes. Hanako-kun has a few shounen like moments which I thought didn’t really fit with the style of the show. On the other hand, Holic limits fighting scenes unless they are absolutely necessary and has more of a “day to day life” vibe.

From a match-making séance with dire consequences, to an old-fashioned bath that becomes haunted depending on the number of occupants, nothing will deter the group from uncovering the truth… no matter how ridiculous it turns out to be!
Number of Episodes: 12 + 1
Release Year: 2012
An unsuspecting student meets the infamous ghost who’s been haunting their school for the past few decades – and this meeting is just the beginning… The basic premise is the same, just genderswapped. Dusk Maiden also is a lot more romance-focused, rather than comedic. In both series, however, you’ll find a bold visual style and aesthetic. You may not see the similarities at first, but give each show a good 4 or 5 episodes and I am sure that you will see.

Number of Episodes: 25
Release Year: 2014 – 2015
Both incorporate Japanese mythology and various supernatural elements (ghosts, gods, phantoms, etc.). Both have a male protagonist who is a supernatural being and has a cheeky and flirty (sometimes) personality, but has a dark past and tries to keep it from his friends so they won’t hate him. Both also have a female protagonist who has a very close relationship with the male lead, comes along on the adventures, and is part-supernatural and part-human. They can both see the male lead even though no one else can. The female lead is in charge of emotional support but has saved and protected the male lead (Yashiro from JSHK only protected Hanako once, but Hiyori from Noragami has saved Yato multiple times). Both have a male character (part of the main trio) that’s blond, youngest of the group, and in charge of protecting everyone. Both involve going on adventures into the “spirit world” and sometimes fighting. Noragami has more battle action than JSHK. Very good character development! I personally think Noragami did character development better than JSHK did, but if you liked how the characters progressed and were explored in JSHK, you’ll like the way Noragami handles its characters. The male protagonist promised to grant the wish of the female lead, which led to all their crazy adventures together. A villain is introduced later in the show who has surprising ties to the male protagonist. Awesome and super catchy opening songs, and the ending songs are nice, too, in both shows.
