Short introduction to Legend of the Galactic Heroes

The 150-year-long stalemate between the two interstellar superpowers, the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance, comes to an end when a new generation of leaders arises: the idealistic military genius Reinhard von Lohengramm, and the FPA’s reserved historian, Yang Wenli.

While Reinhard climbs the ranks of the Empire with the aid of his childhood friend, Siegfried Kircheis, he must fight not only the war, but also the remnants of the crumbling Goldenbaum Dynasty in order to free his sister from the Kaiser and unify humanity under one genuine ruler. Meanwhile, on the other side of the galaxy, Yang—a strong supporter of democratic ideals—has to stand firm in his beliefs, despite the struggles of the FPA, and show his pupil, Julian Mintz, that autocracy is not the solution.

Description: In the future, humans are living on colonized planets and are controlled in every aspect of their life by a system of computers. Evolution has resulted in the birth of people with extraordinary powers. This new race is called Mu. Hated and feared by the humans, the Mu dream of a place to live in peace: Earth—a mystical far away planet—for humanity had to leave their home long ago as pollution and destruction increased and made it impossible to stay there any longer.

Release Year: 2007

LotGH and Terra are the two best space operas anime has to offer. LotGH is superior in most ways except for animation, but Terra follows close behind. They are both epic galaxy and time spanning sagas that tell a tale of humanity being it’s own greatest enemy, and the long road to overcome this.


9. Fate/Zero

Description: With the promise of granting any wish, the omnipotent Holy Grail triggered three wars in the past, each too cruel and fierce to leave a victor. In spite of that, the wealthy Einzbern family is confident that the Fourth Holy Grail War will be different; namely, with a vessel of the Holy Grail now in their grasp. Solely for this reason, the much hated “Magus Killer” Kiritsugu Emiya is hired by the Einzberns, with marriage to their only daughter Irisviel as binding contract.

Release Year: 2011

Both series revolve around war and have a lot of awesome action scenes. Both contain scenes of thought-provoking dialogue that revolves around characters’ different attitudes toward a subject. The characters in both series are composed of a variety of entertaining personalities. To a lesser extent, the characters in both series aren’t necessarily good or evil but instead somewhere in between.


8. Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin

Description: In the year 0068 of the Universal Century, Casval Rem Deikun’s life is thrown into chaotic disarray after the assassination of his father, a prolific figure in the crusade towards civil rights for people who live away from the Earth’s surface. Casval and his sister Artesia receive aid from soldiers who were loyal to their father, and the siblings are whisked away from their home, separated, and thrown into a twisted fate that sees them come into their own as soldiers and adults.

Release Year: 2015

Both Gundam Origin and LotGH deal with war and politics, and have a really similar vibe. Char and Reinhard are similar characters, as they are both tactical geniuses and have hidden agendas.


7. Attack on Titan

Description: Centuries ago, mankind was slaughtered to near extinction by monstrous humanoid creatures called titans, forcing humans to hide in fear behind enormous concentric walls. What makes these giants truly terrifying is that their taste for human flesh is not born out of hunger but what appears to be out of pleasure. To ensure their survival, the remnants of humanity began living within defensive barriers, resulting in one hundred years without a single titan encounter. However, that fragile calm is soon shattered when a colossal titan manages to breach the supposedly impregnable outer wall, reigniting the fight for survival against the man-eating abominations.

Both are about a war where you get to see both sides and no one can be labelled a good guy or bad guy Both have a lot of politics and a large cast that all get fleshed out and have importance to the large scale plot.


6. Berserk

Description: Born from the corpse of his mother, a young mercenary known only as Guts, embraces the battlefield as his only means of survival. Day in and day out, putting his life on the line just to make enough to get by, he moves from one bloodshed to the next.

After a run-in with the Band of the Hawk, a formidable troop of mercenaries, Guts is recruited by their charismatic leader Griffith, nicknamed the “White Hawk.” As he quickly climbed the ranks in order to become the head of the offensive faction, Guts proves to be a mighty addition to Griffith’s force, taking Midland by storm. However, while the band’s quest for recognition continues, Guts slowly realizes that the world is not as black-and-white as he once assumed

Granted, there are huge differences in setting and presentation, but both center around one man’s quest for ultimate power and the many sacrifices that come with this struggle. Political intrigue, war strategy and tactics, along with individual prowess on the battlefield dominate the storyline.


5. Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei

Description: Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei follows the siblings, Tatsuya and Miyuki Shiba, who are enrolled in First High School. Upon taking the exam, the prodigious Miyuki is placed in the First Course, while Tatsuya is relegated to the Second Course. Though his practical test scores and status as a “Weed” show him to be magically inept, he possesses extraordinary technical knowledge, physical combat capabilities, and unique magic techniques—making Tatsuya the irregular at a magical high school.

Both animated works are set in futuristic worlds deeply shaken by class struggle, both contain a healthy dose of political intrigue, explore the human nature, and boast large casts of characters.  


4. Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2199

Description: In desperation, the people of Earth establish the Earth Defense Force, their last defense against the power-hungry Gamilas Empire. However, humanity finds a glimmer of hope after receiving a message from the mysterious planet Iscandar, which offers them a device that would restore Earth to its former glory. With salvation in sight, the Earth Defense Force calls on the prolific Space Battleship Yamato and swiftly assembles a crew to make the 168,000 light-year trek to Iscandar and receive their aid.

Release Year: 2012

Both series show a very active war between the two empires, but while Legend focuses more on an ongoing war between two superpowers of comparable power, in Yamato one of them is on the verge of defeat and the anime covers an expedition to a far world that can win the war if they succeed.


3. Death Note

Description: High school student and prodigy Light Yagami stumbles upon the Death Note and—since he deplores the state of the world—tests the deadly notebook by writing a criminal’s name in it. When the criminal dies immediately following his experiment with the Death Note, Light is greatly surprised and quickly recognizes how devastating the power that has fallen into his hands could be.

Release Year: 2006

Two highly intelligent protagonists with different views on how the world should be fight each other. Not physically, but with their intellect, through strategy and mind games. In Death Note it’s more clear who the bad guy is while in Legend of the Galactic heroes both sides have legitimate arguments and it’s more up to the reader to choose which one to support.


2. Monster

Description: Dr. Kenzou Tenma, an elite neurosurgeon recently engaged to his hospital director’s daughter, is well on his way to ascending the hospital hierarchy. That is until one night, a seemingly small event changes Dr. Tenma’s life forever. While preparing to perform surgery on someone, he gets a call from the hospital director telling him to switch patients and instead perform life-saving brain surgery on a famous performer. His fellow doctors, fiancée, and the hospital director applaud his accomplishment; but because of the switch, a poor immigrant worker is dead, causing Dr. Tenma to have a crisis of conscience.

Release Year: 2004

Both these shows are slow maticulous epics who focus on a large cast of characters from all angles without having to resort to predicably stale plot twists to grab the viewers attention. These are definitely more adult shows intellectually.


1. Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion

Description: Lelouch Lamperouge, a Britannian student, unfortunately finds himself caught in a crossfire between the Britannian and the Area 11 rebel armed forces. He is able to escape, however, thanks to the timely appearance of a mysterious girl named C.C., who bestows upon him Geass, the “Power of Kings.” Realizing the vast potential of his newfound “power of absolute obedience,” Lelouch embarks upon a perilous journey as the masked vigilante known as Zero, leading a merciless onslaught against Britannia in order to get revenge once and for all.

Release Year: 2006

In both the hero is nobility. Lelouch was a discarded prince while Reinhard was a poor noble. But both want to remove the nobility from power. Both have grand plans to unify the world for the sake of their sisters. Both are charismatic and have strong allies and enemies. Both are Genius military guys and will make sacrifices for the grand dream.
