Short introduction to Vinland Saga

Around the end of the millennium, Viking, the mightiest but atrocious tribe, had been outbreaking everywhere. Thorfinn, the son of the greatest warrior, lived his childhood in the battlefield. He was seeking the land of reverie called Vinland. This is the story of a true warrior in an age of turmoil.

10. Attack on Titan

Description: Over a century ago, mankind was devoured by giant beings of unknown intelligence and origin known as Titans – creatures that eat humans alive indiscriminately and for no apparent reason. The remaining population has managed to survive the last hundred years only by building a multi-walled city capable of keeping the Titans at bay, training military recruits to patrol the perimeter and gather intelligence about their mysterious foe. Not only both animes were made by the same studio. They also share key aspects such as the extreme cruelty (main characters may violently die at any time), the political games played by analytical minds, the awesome character development and the medieval scenario.

9. Dororo (2019)

Description: In Japan’s Warring States period, Lord Daigo Kagemitsu makes a pact with 12 demons, exchanging his unborn son for the prosperity of his lands. The child is born malformed and is set adrift in a river, while Kagemitsu’s lands thrive as promised. Years later, young thief Dororo encounters the mysterious “Hyakkimaru”, a boy whose arms are blades and whose visionless eyes seem able to see monsters.

Release Year: 2019

Both protagonist have a tragic background giving them a reason to fight something. Dororo has supernatural elements, but the story still feels real. Vinland Saga doesn’t have any supernatural elements and contains historical figures. 

8. The Heroic Legend of Arslan

Description: As Arslan gathers forces to fight for his cause, his progress is suddenly halted by the warring Princes of the neighboring country, Sindhura. Both brothers believe they have equal claim to the throne, but only one can succeed their father. Sensing the opportunity to form a powerful alliance, Arslan’s trusted advisor, Narsus forms a plan to end the feud once and for all. But their detour in Sindhura gives Lord Silver Mask and his followers time to strengthen their own influence back in Pars. The mystery surrounding Arslan’s true parentage has loyal Parsians questioning his right to rule. Shocked by the revelation that he may be fighting for a throne that isn’t his, Arslan has to wonder: Is blood truly what makes a king Or is the love he has for Pars and its people enough to see him through?

Vinland Saga and Arslan Senki are both medieval anime featuring intense battles between armies, swordfights, and intensely skilled warriors bringing down a bunch of people at once. They also both feature historically based stories, strategy, epic battles, and similar types of characters. If you like one you’ll like the other, plain and simple.

7. Berserk

Description: Born beneath the gallows tree from which his dead mother hung, Guts has always existed on the boundary between life and death. After enduring a terrible childhood, he spends his adulthood in brutal combat, pitting his strength against others in order to build his own. Life is simple enough for Guts until he meets Griffith, the inspirational, ambitious, and beautiful leader of the mercenaries, the Band of the Hawks. When Guts loses to Griffith in a duel, he is forced to join the group, and, despite himself, finds a sense of camaraderie and belonging amongst them. However, as Griffith leads his soldiers from victory to victory, the bloody wars and underhanded politics reveal a side to him that nobody quite expected. Can Guts, a simple warrior, defend those who have come to mean the most to him, all the while struggling not to lose to the darkness he has carried with him his entire life?

If you liked Berserk or Vinland Saga, you’d like the other because both have their stories set in the European middle ages. And they both have a protagonist who is on a quest seeking revenge.

6. One Piece

Description: Long ago the infamous Gol D. Roger was the strongest and most powerful pirate on the seas. As he was about to be executed he revealed that he hid all of his wealth, including the legendary treasure known as One Piece, on an island at the end of the Grand Line – a treacherous and truly unpredictable sea. Monkey D. Luffy is a spirited, energetic and somewhat dim-witted young man with a very big dream: to find One Piece and become the Pirate King! However Luffy is no ordinary boy, as when he was younger he ate one of the Devil’s Fruits and gained its power to become a Rubber Man. Now in this grand age of pirates Luffy sets out to gather a crew and sail to the most dangerous sea in the world so that he can fulfill his dream… and maybe even his appetite!

Vikings and Pirates aren’t any different, so these two anime are similar setting wise, both have very different, but interesting characters, story is massively different, but check these two out.

5. Altair: A Record of Battles

Description: The clouds of war are gathering over the Türkiye Stratocracy as the neighboring Balt-Rhein Empire prepares to aggressively expand its power. 17-year-old Tughril Mahmut is the youngest military leader in Türkiye’s history, and he sits on a council sharply divided between warmongers and pacifists. As an orphan who has already lost his entire village in a massacre, Mahmet is among those bidding for peace; but war is coming whether anyone wants it or not. Can Mahmet successfully build an alliance strong enough to defend his nation, or will the tangled web of political intrigue give Balt-Rhein the advantage it needs to bring about the Türkiye Stratocracy’s downfall?

Set in historical times, these anime series are filled with bloody battles and ancient, old-world politics. 

4. Jormungand

Description: Jonah is a child soldier and the newest bodyguard for Koko, an international arms dealer with an entourage of hired guns. The cold-blooded kid hates Koko’s line of work, but following her into the darkest corners of the black market might be the only way he can find those responsible for his family’s slaughter. Besides, his employer isn’t like most merchants of death. She uses guile and cutthroat tactics to keep her clients armed to the teeth—all while cultivating her own warped plan for the future of world peace. With the CIA desperate for her capture, assassins eager to collect her head, and the potential for every contract to end in ultra-violence, Koko and her comrades in arms bring the boom to every corner of the world.

Both anime follow a young protagonist with combat capabilities, Jormungand following a modern child soldier while Vinland Saga follows a teenage viking. The deuteragonists of both stories also have some similar character traits such as being cunning and in charge of a military force. Also it should be mentioned that the name Jormungand comes from a Norse mythology which many of the characters from Vinland Saga believe in.

3. Shigurui: Death Frenzy

Description: In the 6th year of the Kan’ei era, people enjoy a time of peace; skilled swordsmen are revered and respected, and their lives are their own. Amidst the tranquility, Lord Tokugawa Tadanaka decides, for his own amusement, to hold a fighting tournament in which real swords are used – though laws forbid their use. In a match to the death two highly-skilled swordsmen face off: the one-armed Fujiki Gennosuke, and the blind Iraki Seigen. As they take their respective stances, flashbacks paint a picture of the duo’s past and battle wounds; and thus, the real story begins…

Both animes depict cruel worlds where honor prevails over justice. Every fight is unpredictable: some core characters may die at any time, and others might end up severely and permanently wounded. Hence, gore is very common in these stories, and the feeling of distress hardly vanishes. There are also similarities in the character development, all of them highly believable and consequent in their actions.

2. Parasyte -the maxim-

Description: In secret, alien parasites drift downwards toward Earth. Their directive: to take control of a human body and thrive in secret. When a parasite attempts to take over Shinji, an ordinary high school student, he stops it in his arm to save his mind. With the strange power of amorphous muscle, the curious parasite strikes an uneasy truce with Shinji: it will keep him alive and strong so that it may continue living, and will help protect him from the other parasites that might not take kindly to Shinji’s mind still actively working. Can Shinji gain the courage to face the parasites and protect humanity? And would it even make a difference if he did?

Gory anime with an interesting plot. If you like gore animes this is for you. The main character undergoes a lot of change through trama, so you get to see the major changes they go through with them, and there isn’t a bad anime where the main character goes through unimaginable trama- that I know of.

  1. Kingdom

Description: Shin and Hyou are war-orphans in the kingdom of Qin. They dream of proving themselves on the battlefield until the day Hyou is captured by a minister. The boy manages to escape and return to his village, but he is badly injured. Shin then meets a mysterious youth who bears an eerie resemblance to Hyou—a boy who will one day become emperor!

Release Year: 2012 – ?

Both anime are war oriented and have a similar feel in when it comes to the battle scenes, the determination in Shin and Thorfinn also overlaps.
